Abstract

Soft X-ray Spectromicroscopy is rapidly emerging as a powerful tool for the detailed investigation of plant biopolymers, offering unique insights into their molecular composition and spatial distribution at high resolution. This advanced technique combines the high spatial resolution of X-ray microscopy with the chemical specificity of X-ray absorption spectroscopy, enabling researchers to analyze the structural and compositional features of biopolymers within their native biological contexts. In this study, we review the application of soft X-ray Spectromicroscopy to plant biopolymers, focusing on its ability to provide detailed information about the distribution of elements, chemical states, and molecular interactions within plant tissues. By utilizing soft X-ray spectroscopy, we can obtain highresolution images and spectra that reveal the spatial localization of key components such as cellulose, lignin, and pectin’s, which are crucial for understanding plant cell wall structure and function. The application of this technique has proven to be instrumental in advancing our knowledge of plant biopolymer organization, degradation processes, and interactions with other biological molecules. The ability to perform in situ analysis without the need for extensive sample preparation offers a significant advantage in preserving the natural state of plant tissues, thereby enhancing the accuracy of the findings.
