Louisiana State University and Agricultural & Mechanical College had its source in certain area awards made by the United States government in 1806, 1811, and 1827 for utilization as a theological college of learning. In 1853, the Louisiana General Assembly settled the Seminary of Learning of the State of Louisiana close Pineville, Louisiana. The institution opened January 2, 1860, with Col. William Tecumseh Sherman as administrator. The school shut June 30, 1861, as a result of the Civil War. It revived on April 1, however was again shut on April 23, 1863, because of the intrusion of the Red River Valley by the government armed force. The theological college revived October 2, 1865, just to be blazed October 15, 1869. On November 1, 1869, the institution continued its activities in Baton Rouge, where it has since remained. In 1870, the name of the organization was changed to Louisiana State University. Louisiana State Agricultural & Mechanical College was created by a demonstration of the governing body, endorsed April 7, 1874, to complete the United States Morrill Act of 1862, allowing grounds for this reason. It incidentally opened in New Orleans, June 1, 1874, where it stayed until it blended with Louisiana State University in 1877.
