Polyurethanes materials are widely used in medicine for permanently implanted devices due to its elasticity, mechanical
strength, biostability, biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. However, the immune system recognises polyurethane as
foreign and initiates an immune response that can result in a range of negative consequences including foreign body rejection,
inflammation, bacterial infection, pain and dysfunction of the implant up to revision surgery.We have used plasma immersion
ion implantation methods for activation of the polyurethane surface to allow a covalent binding of biologically active protein
layer.
Aim of investigation is a development of polyurethane composition with mechanical properties adjusted to soft tissue,
plasma modification of polyurethane surface and analysis of its structure, protein attachment and cell adherence on the
modified polyurethane surface, and animal trial experiments. Polyurethane films and tubes of small diameter have been
treated and investigated. Methods of tensile test, AFM, FTIR and XPS spectroscopy of polyurethane and attached proteins,
surface energy method of analysis, ELISA test, cell adherence test and mice experiments have shown a positive influence of the
plasma methods.
