Abstract

The prevalence of MS (Metabolic Syndrome) among Korean men in 2005 was 32.9% by the Korea National Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey (KNHNES). Health care professionals are conducting early identification and treatment of MS to prevent an
epidemic increase in cardiovascular disease. However, there are still an insufficient number of studies on the relationship between MS
and FRS in Korea. This study investigated the prevalence of the MS according to Framingham Risk Score (FRS) group in middle-aged
men using the 5th KNHNES data. The study included a total of 2,803 men, 40-65 years of age, among the subjects who participated
in the KNHNES. The frequency analysis and cross tabulation were done with complex sample analysis. We applied the risk prediction
algorithm used by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines. Among 2,803 participants
without self-reported Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), heart attack and angina pectoris), stroke, renal failure, caner, 15.0% had a 10-
year risk for CHD of >20% (high risk group, HRG), 48.9% of 10% to 20%, (intermediate risk group, IRG), and 36.1% of <10% (low
risk group, LRG). The prevalence rates of MS were 38.1%, 31.0%, and 23.7% in the HRG, IRG, and LRG respectively. The means of
waist circumference were 86.1 cm, 85.5 cm, and 84.8 cm in the HRG, IRG, and LRG respectively. In the HRG, The prevalence rates of
hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia were 43.3%, 17.4%, and 15.5% respectively.
